Summary

In love we find out who we want to be。
In war we find out who we are。

FRANCE, 1939

In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front。 She doesn’t believe that the Nazis will invade France。。。but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent。 When France is overrun, Vianne is forced to take an enemy into her house, and suddenly her every move is watched; her life and her child’s life is at constant risk。 Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates around her, she must make one terrible choice after another。

Vianne’s sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth。 While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets the compelling and mysterious Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can。。。completely。 When he betrays her, Isabelle races headlong into danger and joins the Resistance, never looking back or giving a thought to the real--and deadly--consequences。

With courage, grace and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah takes her talented pen to the epic panorama of WWII and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women’s war。 The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France--a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women。 It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime。

If you want to cry, read this book。 Such an amazing story of strength and sacrifice and it was so refreshing to read about the role women played in WWII and even more amazing that Isabelle is based on a real woman。 There aren’t a ton of twists but it is very suspenseful and not at all predictable, I finished this book in 2 and a half days and would’ve finished it sooner if I didn’t want to spend at least a little time with my fiancé 😂 I would recommend to anyone and it’s become a favorite。

I cried three times reading this book。 This is the first book I’ve read by Kristin Hannah but definitely won’t be the last。 She tells a story so well。The book is from the perspective of two women, sisters, during WW2。 With this being historical fiction it’s obviously twisted some of the truths here and there but overall it gives you a whole new perspective on WW2 and the Germans invading France。 It’s compelling and heartbreaking but also proves that woman are strong and fearless。 I can’t recomme I cried three times reading this book。 This is the first book I’ve read by Kristin Hannah but definitely won’t be the last。 She tells a story so well。The book is from the perspective of two women, sisters, during WW2。 With this being historical fiction it’s obviously twisted some of the truths here and there but overall it gives you a whole new perspective on WW2 and the Germans invading France。 It’s compelling and heartbreaking but also proves that woman are strong and fearless。 I can’t recommend this book enough。 。。。more

An epic book about love and war and the choices we make which follows two sisters as they fight for survival through WWII in very different ways。 I thought Isabelle much the better written character and sighed often at Vianne's thoughts and deeds as they didn't seem to add up。 There were too many cliches and badly written repetitive passages。 Their father was also a bit of a cipher and seemed to be an afterthought to get the story the author wanted。 It sounds rather like I didn't enjoy the book, An epic book about love and war and the choices we make which follows two sisters as they fight for survival through WWII in very different ways。 I thought Isabelle much the better written character and sighed often at Vianne's thoughts and deeds as they didn't seem to add up。 There were too many cliches and badly written repetitive passages。 Their father was also a bit of a cipher and seemed to be an afterthought to get the story the author wanted。 It sounds rather like I didn't enjoy the book, but I did, in parts。 More in the second half when the pace picked up a bit。 There were places in the story when I was completely gripped but others (no spoilers) where I felt that too many horrors (some I felt did not belong in the book) were included。 A genuine emotional rollercoaster but somehow unsatisfying and turgid。 A shorter version would have suited me as the story did not need the part I am referring to or the strange cooking descriptions which cropped up when there was literally no food to be bought。。 Three stars, but veering between 2 and 4。 。。。more

This book is beautiful。 The way history is told through the fictional story is clever, and the characters are all very real and powerful。 It’s raw and emotional, and truly makes you feel the pain of war。 Some parts were a little cliche, but other than that, this book is definitely one I would recommend and a truly beautiful read。

This book was recommended to me by a friend, she said it was one of the best books she had read and even lent me her copy to read, oh and I am so glad she did, this is a beautiful story, heartbreaking, tender, it tells the story of sisters Vianne and Isabelle born ten years apart and what happens when World War 2 breaks out and France surrenders to Germany and the way they both cope。 A box of tissues is very necessary。Vianne is married with a young daughter Sophie when her husband leaves to figh This book was recommended to me by a friend, she said it was one of the best books she had read and even lent me her copy to read, oh and I am so glad she did, this is a beautiful story, heartbreaking, tender, it tells the story of sisters Vianne and Isabelle born ten years apart and what happens when World War 2 breaks out and France surrenders to Germany and the way they both cope。 A box of tissues is very necessary。Vianne is married with a young daughter Sophie when her husband leaves to fight the battle she is sure that the Nazis will not invade and that things will get back to normal very soon, her life is shattered when they do invade and that German officers get billeted in her house。 Life is hard without food and money and doing all she can to keep her daughter safe。Isabelle is wild and strong willed and is sent to stay with her sister in Carriveau, but Isabelle is not keen on staying in the house with a Nazi and she wants to be off fighting with the Resistance, when she meets Gaetan a partisan he says no she stands her ground and takes off to Paris to fight the Nazis anyway she can。This story shows the strength and courage of the woman and men of the Resistance and what they went through to help win the war, Vianne and Isabelle are so totally different but both do what must be done, through pain, love and heartbreak。 I loved this story from start to finish and there were many times I was crying especially at the end, I would highly recommend this one。 。。。more

War history has always held a special place in my heart but the women in war history intrigues me even more。 This story was written with so much love and passion that by the end I had fallen in love with so many of the characters and I had tears in my eyes。 As an American, we often are not taught the details of the war as we should have been when Hitler wanted to rule the world。 While many of these events are indeed fictional, many stories from that era are similar。 Kristin Hannah captured a tru War history has always held a special place in my heart but the women in war history intrigues me even more。 This story was written with so much love and passion that by the end I had fallen in love with so many of the characters and I had tears in my eyes。 As an American, we often are not taught the details of the war as we should have been when Hitler wanted to rule the world。 While many of these events are indeed fictional, many stories from that era are similar。 Kristin Hannah captured a truly mesmerizing story。 。。。more

A phenomenal and very difficult book。 It tells of realities and truths that aren’t often discussed。 It hurts to read, but is also absolutely brilliant。

Another really fantastic book by this author。 The story was riveting, the characters were very real and nuanced, and I love her writing。 The book actually made me cry in a few parts, which happens very rarely for me。 An all around great book。

I knew what I was signing up for when I started this book, but still…With an albeit very slow start and middle (it really picks up around 50% through), the ending was a whirlwind of emotions—from horror to grief to hope to surprise。 The interspersed first person chapters also got me thinking and with some deduction, I figured out the plot twist, but it still left its mark on me。 Overall, I found this book a nice way to get back into reading, even though there were many parts that were unrealisti I knew what I was signing up for when I started this book, but still…With an albeit very slow start and middle (it really picks up around 50% through), the ending was a whirlwind of emotions—from horror to grief to hope to surprise。 The interspersed first person chapters also got me thinking and with some deduction, I figured out the plot twist, but it still left its mark on me。 Overall, I found this book a nice way to get back into reading, even though there were many parts that were unrealistic (too much deus ex machina, ya know?)。 。。。more
